To provide data on water management, capacity, safety, and water source for registered dams in South Africa.
As of July 2025, the registry includes all dams with a safety risk—defined as dams ≥ 5 m in height or storing ≥ 50 000 m³—in accordance with National Water Act (1998) Chapter 12 and Dam Safety Regulations
Data contains: name of the dam, water management area, quaternary drainage area, town nearest to the dam, distance from town, name of the farm, municipal district, region code, river or watercourse, completion date, wall type, wall height, crest length in meters, spill way type, capacity, surface area, catchment area, the purpose of the dam, owner, contractor, size, category and hazard potential. The annual reports entail the direct cost of dam safety administration, progress with registration of dams, distribution of registered dams according to reservoir storage capacity, Progress with the five-yearly inspections, number of dams per sector within first 100 dams as ranked on priority list
