Dataset
To highlight areas with limited access to streets.
The map uses a novel approach to estimate population and measure how well connected buildings are to surrounding street networks. Understanding the degree to which buildings have access to streets can reveal information about the well-being of a community, since streets deliver critical public services in the form of piped sewers, water lines, transit systems, waste collection, and emergency services.
The first comprehensive look at informal settlements, helping to identify communities most in need of roads, power, water, sanitation and other infrastructure. It is designed for use by researchers, technologists, international organizations, community leaders, and governments and gets updates on a quarterly interval.
The database incorporates multiple sources, including: OpenStreetMap accessed via the Geofabrik download server, DigitizeAfrica building footprints from Maxar Technologies Inc and Ecopia.AI, coastline data from the Daylight Map Distribution, administrative areas from GADM database 4.1, gridded population data from ORNL LandScan 2020 (1km²) and WorldPop 2020 (constrained, 100m²), GHSL Urban Centre database 2015 and OECD/SWAC Africapolis database 2020.
