To provide a comprehensive, data-driven assessment of environmental sustainability and environmental performance across countries, enabling comparison of national performance against established environmental policy targets and supporting analysis of environmental health, ecosystem vitality, and climate change.
The indicators are intended to help identify environmental problems, assess progress toward policy targets, compare countries, and examine differences in environmental performance across issue areas.
The EPI platform provides country-level environmental performance scores, rankings, trends, indicator-level results, and information on the EPI framework and methodology. The 2026 release includes 47 indicators covering 12 issue categories, with data available for analysis by country, issue category, and policy objective. The associated Downloads page provides the 2026 scores, trends and ranks spreadsheet, indicator scores, raw data, missing-value-coded versions of the data, and explanations, targets and weights, together with the technical appendix and policymakers' summary.
The EPI is constructed as a composite indicator. The process involves identifying and cleaning data from relevant sources, converting the underlying observations into performance metrics, and aggregating individual indicators into scores for issue categories, policy objectives, and the overall EPI. Data are sourced from international organizations, research institutions, academic institutions, and government agencies, with many datasets subject to third-party verification or auditable data-collection processes.
