To provide counts of migrants who have died or gone missing at the external borders of states.
Data covers the period 2014-2021. This study is conducted under Missing Migrants Project by the International Organization for Migration (IOM).
Dataset contains number of deaths and cause of deaths. Cause of death consist of: drowning, mixed or unknown, death linked to hazardous transport, harsh environmental conditions , lack of adequate shelter, food, water, violence, sickness, lack of access to adequate healthcare and accidental deaths.
Data are obtained from local authorities i.e. coast guards, sheriff’s offices, medical examiners, interviews with survivors provided by IOM field offices, United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) and media reports.
