To reduce the risk of diarrhea and increase household productivity by stimulatind demand for sanitation in the lives of residents.
The ambitious project was launched in 1999 and implemented countrywide in rural areas with an aim to attain open defaecation free status in India by 2011.
Information collected were from the treatment group (participated in the Total Sanitation Campaign immediately after the baseline) and Control (to be subjected to Total Sanitation Campaign after follow-up data collection). The baseline information was collected from 2000 households between June and July 2009 and the ending survey between February and March 2011. These surveys collected data of drinking water sources, drinking water storage, drinking water treatment, program exposure, household income, observations of handwashing facilities, observation of animals and faeces, observations of toilets, perceptions of illness, anthropometry of infants, water and stool samples, community sanitation facilities, etc.
