To provide a summary of hydrogeological understanding and groundwater resources in Namibia.
Namibia is an arid country with low rainfall and high evapotranspiration. The only permanent rivers are along the northern and southern borders. Across the rest of the country surface waters are ephemeral after seasonal rainfall, with many of them dammed. Groundwater supplies most water supplies across the country, from springs and boreholes, and in rural areas also from hand dug wells. There are a number of large scale piped distribution schemes transferring both groundwater and surface water to urban areas.
