To identify vulnerable communities that may require additional support in preparing for hazards or recovering from disaster.
Vulnerability cannot be measured directly, therefore, proxies are constructed through indices. Typically, vulnerability was considered in relation to specific hazards, however, the Social Vulnerability Index (SVI) was developed to serve as a proxy of the vulnerability of the population in the United States.
This dataset entails socioeconomic status (Below Poverty, Unemployed, Income, No High School Diploma), household composition and disability (aged 65 or Older, Aged 17 or younger, civilian with a disability, single-parent households), minority status and language (minority, speaks english “less than well”), and housing type and transportation (multi-unit structures, mobile homes, crowding, no vehicle, group quarters).
