Dataset
To provide expenditure and service-level data for water supply systems and sanitation facilities in Mozambique to support analysis of WASH costs, service delivery, and life-cycle sustainability.
The dataset was developed through the WASHCost project and published by IRC in 2013. WASHCost examined the costs of providing sustainable water and sanitation services, with particular attention to the full life-cycle costs associated with WASH services. The Mozambique dataset combines primary survey data with secondary information on water and sanitation expenditure.
The dataset contains water supply and sanitation expenditure and service-level data for Mozambique. It includes separate datasets covering water costs and service levels and sanitation costs and service levels, along with supporting survey instruments for water points, small-town water systems, and public and institutional latrines. The collection also includes documentation on the WASHCost sampling methodology. The water-related data include information associated with boreholes with handpumps and other water supply systems, while the sanitation data cover sanitation facilities and their associated costs and service levels.
Primary data were collected in 2010 using household and water-point surveys. Secondary expenditure data were obtained in collaboration with Mozambique's National Directorate for Water (DNA), including more than 300 government contracts for the construction and rehabilitation of boreholes with handpumps from the SINAS database. The WASHCost approach was used to examine expenditure in relation to WASH service levels and life-cycle costs.
