The objective of this research is to highlight variations in the ease of social distancing in urban settings in Liberia by calculating an index based on population density and building footprints.
The research aims to provide insights into the feasibility of social distancing in urban areas in Liberia to support public health planning and disease control efforts, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Point locations scattered throughout urban zones in Liberia, each tagged with social-distancing metrics at that specific spot. A generalized grid or surface layer representing the social distancing index—an aggregate score that reflects the ease of distancing based on factors like population density.
Measures of population density were calculated from high-resolution gridded population datasets from WorldPop, and the space available around buildings was calculated using building footprint polygons derived from satellite imagery (Ecopia.AI and Maxar Technologies. 2020).
