This research focuses on assessing the feasibility of social distancing in urban areas of Ghana amid the COVID-19 pandemic. It emphasizes the importance of maintaining physical distance to reduce disease transmission and aims to identify locations where social distancing may be challenging.
Point locations scattered throughout urban zones in Ghana, each tagged with social-distancing metrics at that specific spot. A generalized grid or surface layer representing the social distancing index—an aggregate score that reflects the ease of distancing based on factors like population density.
Measures of population density were calculated from high-resolution gridded population datasets from WorldPop, and the space available around buildings was calculated using building footprint polygons derived from satellite imagery (Ecopia.AI and Maxar Technologies. 2020).
