To provide summary information used to identify cholera hotspots in Kenya and support evidence-based targeting of cholera prevention and control interventions under Kenya's 2022-2030 Cholera Elimination Plan.
This dataset is supplementary material associated with the study, "Mapping of cholera hotspots in Kenya using epidemiologic and water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) indicators as part of Kenya's new 2022–2030 cholera elimination plan," published in PLOS Neglected Tropical Diseases in 2023. The study was undertaken by the Kenya Ministry of Health and collaborating partners to identify priority geographical areas for cholera interventions in alignment with the Global Task Force on Cholera Control (GTFCC) roadmap for ending cholera
The dataset contains county- and subcounty-level information used to identify cholera hotspots in Kenya. Variables include population estimates, cumulative cholera cases (2015-2019), mean annual incidence, disease persistence, epidemiological priority classifications, household access to improved water and sanitation services, WASH rankings, risk scores, and final combined priority classifications for cholera intervention planning.
Cholera hotspots were identified using the Global Task Force on Cholera Control (GTFCC) framework by combining epidemiological and WASH indicators at the subcounty level. Epidemiological indicators included the mean annual incidence of cholera and the percentage of weekly disease persistence for the period 2015-2019, while WASH indicators included household access to improved water sources and improved sanitation facilities. These indicators were ranked and combined through a risk scoring approach to classify subcounties into priority categories and identify areas requiring targeted cholera prevention and control interventions.
