To discuss the challenges and strategies related to the operation and maintenance of handpumps in Ghana. It aims to address the issues of sustainability and the risk of water points falling out of service due to inadequate maintenance, emphasizing the need for ongoing support and proper management to ensure the longevity of water supply systems.
Dataset entails rural water supply management in Ghana, with a focus on the challenges faced in maintaining handpumps after their installation. The image of broken-down, unused handpumps littering landscapes in Sub-Saharan Africa is a familiar and disappointing sight for many in the water sector. Many factors contribute to the lack of sustainability of these water points and they must be addressed in order to reach Sustainable Development Goal 6.1 for access to safe and affordable drinking water for all by 2030.
Analysis of the issues related to the operation and maintenance of handpumps in rural Ghana, highlighting the reliance on external donor support for initial infrastructure investments and the critical importance of adequate maintenance to protect these investments and ensure long-term functionality of water points.
