Little is known about the factors driving the choice of improved public water sources over unimproved alternatives in rural areas in developing countries. This study aims to fill this research gap and contribute to the body of knowledge on public water source choice in rural areas.

A random sample of 200 villages was taken from the water service planning lists for 2009 and 2010 in the rural areas of Mono-Couffo in Southern Benin, and Collines in Central Benin.
