Dataset Objective

To show snow and ice cover extent in the Northern hemisphere.

Context

Data covers the period 1966-2005. Scientists measure how much of our world is covered by snow and ice to help them better understand and predict changes in Earth's weather and climate.

What is included

Dataset contains snow-free land, snow-covered land and sea ice. Sea ice is indicated in light blue and snow cover in white.

Collection Methods

Data is generated from brightness temperature data derived from Nimbus-7 Scanning Multichannel Microwave Radiometer (SMMR) and Defense Meteorological Satellite Program (DMSP) -F8, -F11 and -F13 Special Sensor Microwave/.image(.png, .jpg), .image(.png, .jpg)r (SSM/I).
