Dataset
To provide accessible, high-resolution hydrographic and watershed datasets for mapping, analysis, and water resource management.
Developed by the U.S. Geological Survey, these datasets are distributed as downloadable files and web-based map services to support GIS applications and national water data infrastructure.
The datasets include the NHDPlus High Resolution (NHDPlus HR) and National Hydrography Dataset (NHD). Note that the National Hydrology Dataset will continue to be available, but is no longer maintained after 2023. The most current data is through the 3D Hydrography Program (3DHP) instead. Datasets also include the Watershed Boundary Dataset (WBD), which contain detailed information on surface water features, flow networks, and watershed boundaries.
The datasets are created by integrating hydrography, watershed boundaries, and elevation data within a GIS framework to model and standardize surface water networks across the United States.
