Dataset
To provide a global compilation of alkalinity and pH values from inland surface waters (rivers, lakes/reservoirs, and wetlands) collected from 18 databases and 55 scientific articles
The dataset provides a global, basin-scale representation of inland surface water chemistry by integrating observed pH and alkalinity measurements from multiple databases and literature sources with modeled estimates across HydroBASINS, using environmental and lithological predictors derived from HydroSHEDS and the Global Lithological Map GLiM.
pH and alkalinity values for surface waters within HydroBASINS polygons, estimated worldwide, pH and alkalinity measured values at sites used for model construction, along with the associated predictor variables obtained for the project
Global water chemistry data were compiled for inland waters (rivers, lakes/reservoirs, and wetlands) from May to July 2022. The data were prepared by harmonizing and filtering the hydrochemical data using Python scripts. After applying rigorous quality-control filters, the final dataset comprised data from 50,916 sites for alkalinity and 107,896 for pH, distributed across continents.
