To provide nationally consistent groundwater information needed for groundwater resource planning, management, assessment, and long-term monitoring across the United States.
The network was developed to improve access to comparable groundwater information across major U.S. aquifer systems and support understanding of groundwater conditions and trends.
At the time of entry, the network includes 17,920 water-level wells, 4,179 water-quality wells, 10 subnetworks, 38 contributing agencies, 53 administrative units, and monitoring coverage across 65 principal aquifers.
The data are collected through groundwater monitoring programs operated by federal, state, tribal, and local agencies. Monitoring wells are selected into the NGWMN framework based on standardized criteria related to monitoring quality, aquifer representation, data accessibility, and long-term observation value.
