To provide centralized access for water quality monitoring data that supports water resource assessment, pollution management, environmental decision-making, and scientific analysis across the United States
The Water Quality eXchange (WQX) provides the standardized national format for submitting water quality data, while WQXWeb helps users prepare and upload datasets. The Water Quality Portal combines WQX submissions with USGS data and currently provides access to more than 430 million publicly available water quality records for download, retrieval, GIS analysis, and environmental research
The platform includes water quality monitoring records, contaminant measurements, biological and chemical observations, sampling metadata, monitoring station information, and data contributed by over 900 agencies, organizations, Tribes, watershed groups, and monitoring programs through the Water Quality eXchange (WQX) and Water Quality Portal (WQP).
The system was developed under the U.S. Clean Water Act framework, where federal, state, tribal, local, academic, and volunteer monitoring programs collect and share water quality data to assess the condition of rivers, lakes, streams, groundwater, and other water bodies.
