To provide national geospatial information on the service areas of public water systems in the United States to support drinking water management, infrastructure planning, and regulatory assessment
By linking public water systems to the populations and geographic areas they serve, the dataset improves understanding of drinking water access, compliance, and infrastructure distribution across the United States
The dataset includes geospatial service area boundaries for more than 44,000 community water systems across all 50 U.S. states, Washington, D.C., tribal areas, and U.S. territories. It also contains associated system attributes such as Public Water System IDs (PWSIDs), population served, and service connection information linked to Safe Drinking Water Information System (SDWIS) records.
The dataset was developed using publicly available state and utility service area boundaries, utility-provided GIS data, SDWIS records, and EPA geospatial modeling methods. Where official boundaries were unavailable, EPA used spatial estimation and machine learning approaches to approximate service areas.
