To provide a national database and reporting system for monitoring public water systems, drinking water compliance, violations, enforcement actions, and regulatory activities under the Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA)
The Safe Drinking Water Information System (SDWIS) was developed as the federal data hub used by EPA and states to oversee public water systems, monitor compliance with drinking water regulations, protect public health, and support national drinking water reporting and enforcement activities
The database contains information on public water systems, including system names, IDs, population served, water source characteristics, system type, seasonal status, violations, contaminant monitoring results, enforcement actions, inspections, and compliance-related activities. The system also includes information related to monitoring schedules, sampling, PFAS reporting, and service line inventories
The data are collected through mandatory regulatory reporting by public water systems and state or tribal primacy agencies under the Safe Drinking Water Act. States supervise water systems within their jurisdictions and submit inventory, monitoring, sample, violation, and enforcement data to EPA through SDWIS reporting systems and Exchange Network data flows
