To provide public access to geospatial and water quality information for unregulated water sources on and around the Navajo Nation
The platform was developed in response to drinking water access disparities and environmental contamination concerns affecting the Navajo Nation, where many households lack plumbing and rely on unregulated water sources for daily activities
The platform contains data for 4,824 water sources and includes up to 49 water quality parameters per source, including radionuclides, metals, metalloids, and other contaminants. The dataset incorporates groundwater well records, water quality observations from 18 studies conducted between 1905 and 2020, suitable-use assessments for irrigation, household chores, and livestock watering, confidence metrics, and geospatial visualization tools.
The dataset was compiled from groundwater wells and water quality studies conducted by organizations including the U.S. Geological Survey, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, CDC, Navajo Nation EPA, University of New Mexico, Diné College, and Northern Arizona University. Data were collected through groundwater sampling, laboratory analysis, environmental monitoring, and geospatial compilation
