Dataset
To track the proportion of the U.S. population served by community water systems that did not report violations of health-based drinking water standards under the Safe Drinking Water Act.
The indicator is part of the EPA Report on the Environment (ROE), which provides national environmental indicators used to assess environmental and human health conditions in the United States. This indicator evaluates drinking water system compliance with health-based standards established under the Safe Drinking Water Act.
At the time of entry, the indicator page included three exhibits showing the percentage of the U.S. population served by community water systems with no reported violations of EPA health-based drinking water standards (Fiscal years 1993-2023), by EPA Region (Fiscal years 1993-2023), and by type of violation (Fiscal year 2023)
The data are collected through drinking water compliance monitoring and reporting conducted by community water systems and state primacy agencies under the Safe Drinking Water Act. States submit violation data to EPA’s Safe Drinking Water Information System (SDWIS).
