CARICOOS is the Caribbean regional association of the U.S. Integrated Ocean Observing System (IOOS) serving Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. The system was developed to integrate oceanographic observations, forecasting systems, and environmental monitoring tools that support stakeholders in tourism, marine recreation, navigation, fisheries, emergency response, ecosystem management, and coastal resilience.
Available data and tools include wind conditions, waves, currents, water temperature, salinity, turbidity, dissolved oxygen, pH, rip current forecasts, coastal inundation models, Sargassum tracking tools, ocean energy maps, and environmental monitoring products for the Caribbean region.
The data are collected through networks of ocean observing systems including offshore buoys, coastal weather stations, radar systems, oceanographic instruments, satellite observations, autonomous platforms, and numerical ocean models operated by CARICOOS and partner organizations.
