To provide access to oceanographic and coastal environmental data that support marine research, coastal management, navigation, environmental monitoring, hazard preparedness, and decision-making along the California coast.
CalOOS is part of the U.S. Integrated Ocean Observing System (IOOS) network and was developed to coordinate and integrate ocean observing activities across California. The system supports scientific understanding and operational monitoring of coastal and ocean conditions through collaboration among research institutions, government agencies, and marine monitoring programs.
The platform provides access to real-time and historical ocean and coastal observations, including wave conditions, ocean currents, water temperature, salinity, meteorological conditions, buoy observations, ocean forecasts, HF radar data, coastal station measurements, and marine environmental monitoring products.
The data are collected through coastal and offshore observing systems including ocean buoys, HF radar systems, coastal weather stations, oceanographic sensors, autonomous instruments, satellites, and numerical ocean models operated by CalOOS and partner organizations.
