To provide a global open dataset on faecal / fecal sludge management (FSM) systems and service chains to support sanitation planning, research, monitoring, and decision-making in low- and middle-income countries.
FSMGlobal is part of the openwashdata initiative, an open science community focused on improving access to reusable Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) data. The dataset was developed to address the limited availability of standardized global data on faecal sludge management systems, service delivery, containment, emptying, transport, treatment, and reuse practices.
The dataset includes global faecal sludge management information related to sanitation service chains, including containment systems, emptying practices, transport methods, treatment processes, disposal or reuse pathways, service providers, and FSM infrastructure characteristics collected from multiple countries and cities.
The data were compiled from published WHO/UNICEF Joint Monitoring Programme for Water Supply, Sanitation, and Hygiene. The data were used to estimate the number of household onsite sanitation facilities in the regions of interest and to allocate them to service types.
