Dataset
To compile and analyze published information on the economic and resource recovery value of fecal sludge (faecal sludge) in Africa and Asia in order to support sanitation planning, resource recovery assessment, and faecal sludge management (FSM) research
The dataset was developed through a literature review focused on resource recovery from faecal sludge and the potential economic value of sanitation by-products. The work contributes to broader research on sustainable sanitation, circular economy approaches, and faecal sludge management in low- and middle-income countries.
The data includes resource type, geographic location, annual revenue estimates, inflation- and purchasing power-adjusted values, theoretical value scores, pricing and quality assessments, and justifications for valuation approaches. Resource recovery categories include fuel, fertilizer, biogas, electricity, protein, construction materials, and other reuse products derived from faecal sludge management systems.
The data were compiled through a structured literature review of published sanitation and faecal sludge management studies focused on resource recovery and economic valuation.
