Dataset
To provide data on borehole functionality, maintenance, and operational performance in Malawi to support rural water supply management, infrastructure monitoring, and water service sustainability research.
The dataset was developed through the openwashdata initiative to support understanding of factors affecting rural borehole functionality and long-term water service delivery in Malawi. It contributes to broader research on sustainable operation and maintenance of rural water infrastructure.
The dataset includes information on borehole operational status, functionality conditions, repair history, maintenance activities, management arrangements, downtime, water access characteristics, and infrastructure-related variables for rural boreholes in Malawi. It also contains geographic and community-level information associated with borehole performance and service delivery conditions.
The data were collected using a 20-minute questionnaire about boreholes administered through KoboToolbox. The survey collected borehole functionality information from 300 respondents aged 18 years and above.
