To provide household-level data on water, sanitation, and hygiene conditions in Malawi to support WASH research, service monitoring, and public health analysis.
The dataset was developed through the OpenWashData initiative to make WASH survey data from Malawi openly accessible for analysis and reproducible research. It supports understanding of household access to water, sanitation, and hygiene services and practices in Malawi.
The dataset contains 23,112 observations and 27 variables from household WASH surveys conducted in Malawi between 2018 and 2023. Each record represents a completed household survey and includes survey metadata (submission date, consent status, GPS coordinates), water point information (water source type, collection method, region, location accuracy, altitude), water quality indicators (microbial test results, confidence levels, and associated health risks), sanitation information (toilet type, waste removal and treatment methods), hygiene indicators (availability of handwashing facilities, water, and soap), and other socio-environmental information collected through structured and open-ended survey questions.
The data were collected through the SDG Household-Level Survey for WASH conducted by BASEFlow Malawi between 2018 and 2023. Survey responses were collected using the mWater platform, a mobile data collection and monitoring system widely used in the WASH sector.
