To provide data on the characteristics, usage, condition, and management of artesian well sites in Malawi to support groundwater resource assessment, water supply planning, and water point management
The dataset was developed through the OpenWashData initiative and contains site assessment information for artesian wells across multiple districts in Malawi. It supports analysis of groundwater resources, infrastructure conditions, water use patterns, and management arrangements associated with artesian wells.
The dataset contains assessment data from 44 documented artesian well sites located in districts including Zomba, Blantyre, Mangochi, Thyolo, Lilongwe, Dowa, Balaka, Mwanza, Neno, and Chiradzulo. Each record represents a unique well site and includes geolocation data (latitude and longitude), water-source characteristics, infrastructure information, site-usage patterns, environmental conditions, and management structures. Variables cover whether the source is artesian, the presence of infrastructure, the ability to conduct flow testing, the time required to fill a 20-litre container, primary and secondary uses (e.g., domestic use, irrigation, fish farming), nearby water abstraction points, seasonal water availability, nearby rivers, and photographic documentation of site conditions through image URLs.
The data were collected through field assessments of artesian well sites in Malawi during April 2024. Survey teams documented site characteristics, infrastructure conditions, water source attributes, usage patterns, environmental features, management arrangements, and captured photographs linked to each site.
