To provide household-level data on water access, water service reliability, and consumer satisfaction with water points in Malawi to support rural water supply planning, service improvement, WASH research, and water governance analysis
The dataset contains household water access and satisfaction information collected in selected communities in Zomba and Mangochi Districts, Malawi. The survey was designed to assess household experiences with water services, including accessibility, functionality of water points, user satisfaction, seasonal water shortages, and economic aspects of water use.
The dataset waterconsumersurvey contains 423 observations and 41 variables, with each row representing a surveyed household. Variables include survey metadata and GPS information, household demographics, education and income characteristics, household size, primary water source, water point functionality status, reasons for non-functionality, current water point problems, water collection time, seasonal water shortages, daily household water use, water tariffs, willingness to pay for improvements, and satisfaction indicators related to service levels, maintenance funds, sanitation and hygiene conditions, theft protection, and water quality
The data were collected on 20 September 2021 using the mWater mobile data collection platform. Enumerators visited households in Zomba and Mangochi Districts and collected geo-referenced responses through structured digital household surveys, allowing spatially traceable and standardized data collection on water access and user satisfaction
