Dataset
To provide laboratory water quality test results from water points across Malawi.
The dataset was developed to support structured water quality monitoring workflows, enabling government agencies, WASH practitioners, water utilities, researchers, and development partners to assess drinking water safety and manage water quality risks.
The dataset contains 32 observations and 53 variables, with each record representing a water sample collected from a water point in Malawi. Variables include water point information (name, type, latitude, longitude), sample management information (sample collection date, laboratory analysis date, results received date, laboratory sample number), and a wide range of water quality parameters including pH, conductivity, total dissolved solids (TDS), carbonate, bicarbonate, chloride, sulphate, nitrate, fluoride, sodium, potassium, calcium, magnesium, iron, manganese, hardness, alkalinity, arsenic, turbidity, suspended solids, faecal coliform counts, and faecal streptococci counts. For most parameters, the dataset also includes indicators showing whether the measured values complied with Malawi water quality standards, as well as laboratory comments and observations.
The data were collected from various water points across Malawi between 2017 and 2019 using the mWater platform. Water samples were collected in the field, submitted for laboratory analysis, and recorded using a structured workflow that tracked sample collection dates, laboratory analysis dates, receipt of results, and laboratory test outcomes. The dataset includes both field metadata and laboratory-derived water quality measurements.
