To provide household-level data on sanitation, hygiene, and menstrual hygiene management (MHM) practices collected during an Open Defecation Free (ODF) verification exercise
This dataset was collected to assess whether communities in Dowa and Ntchisi districts had achieved and maintained the sanitation and hygiene standards required for ODF certification.
The dataset contains 939 observations and 34 variables, with each record representing a surveyed household. Variables include household sanitation facility type, presence of pit covers or water seals, latrine privacy and security, sharing arrangements, distance to sanitation facilities, child faeces disposal practices, evidence of open defecation around households and villages, handwashing facilities and the availability of water and soap, menstrual hygiene management (MHM) facilities and practices, bathing facilities, bathing water sources, survey dates, district information, Traditional Authority (TA), Group Village Headman (GVH), and associated health facilities.
The data were collected in 2019 through household surveys and direct observations conducted during an ODF verification exercise in Dowa and Ntchisi districts using the mWater mobile data collection platform to record sanitation infrastructure, hygiene conditions, and household responses related to sanitation and hygiene practices.
