To provide public access to hydrographic and surface water geospatial datasets that support water resource management, environmental monitoring, hydrological analysis, mapping, infrastructure planning, and natural resource management in Alaska.
The Hydrography collection is part of the Alaska State Geoportal, a centralized platform managed by the Alaska Department of Natural Resources for discovering and accessing authoritative geospatial data. The collection focuses on hydrographic features and water resources across Alaska. It provides access to datasets and web services describing rivers, streams, lakes, ponds, wetlands, watersheds, and other surface water features.
The portal contains multiple hydrography-related datasets, map services, and geospatial resources. These include the USGS National Hydrography Database (NHD), hydrographic flowlines, rivers, streams, lakes, ponds, wetlands, waterbodies, watershed boundaries, drainage networks, stream gauges, dams, and associated hydrologic features. Resources are available as downloadable geodatabases, shapefiles, web services, and interactive maps. The datasets support both cartographic representation and hydrologic network analysis through attributes such as flow direction, waterbody identifiers, stream names, reach codes, and watershed delineations.
The hydrography datasets are compiled from multiple federal and state mapping and monitoring programs, including the USGS National Hydrography Dataset. Data are developed through geospatial mapping, remote sensing, hydrologic surveys, watershed delineation, hydrographic digitization, and ongoing stewardship partnerships that maintain and update surface water features across Alaska.
