To provide public access to hydrology and water-resource datasets that support water resource management and environmental monitoring
The Hydrology Collection is part of the Maryland Open Data Portal, the state's centralized platform for accessing public datasets from state and local agencies. The collection focuses on water-related and hydrologic information and complements Maryland's GIS Data Catalog (MD iMAP), which serves as the authoritative source for many geospatial datasets used throughout the state.
The collection contains datasets related to Maryland's surface water and hydrologic systems. Resources include waterbodies such as rivers, streams, lakes, and ponds; hydrographic features; watershed and drainage information; hydrologic monitoring resources; water-resource datasets; environmental water features; and related GIS layers. Examples available through Maryland's GIS resources include detailed datasets on rivers and streams, lakes, and other waterbody features used for mapping, environmental assessment, and water-resource management.
Datasets are compiled and maintained by Maryland state agencies and partner organizations through hydrologic monitoring programs, GIS mapping initiatives, environmental surveys, water-resource assessments, field observations, and administrative data collection. Data are published through Maryland's Open Data Portal and MD iMAP, where users can search, visualize, download, and integrate the information into GIS and analytical applications. Methodologies vary according to the contributing agency and dataset.
