To provide a comprehensive geospatial inventory of water quality monitoring locations used by the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection (MassDEP)
The database was developed by the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection (MassDEP), Division of Watershed Management (DWM), Watershed Planning Program (WPP). It represents monitoring locations used to evaluate the ecological and chemical condition of rivers, streams, lakes, estuaries, and discharge points throughout Massachusetts. The monitoring program supports Massachusetts' Integrated Report of Waters and other Clean Water Act reporting obligations.
The database contains georeferenced monitoring stations sampled between 1983 and 2022 across Massachusetts. It includes four major categories of monitoring locations: fish toxics stations where fish tissue samples are collected and analyzed for contaminants; fish population stations where fish communities and habitat conditions are assessed; benthic macroinvertebrate stations where aquatic organisms and habitat quality are evaluated; and water quality stations where physical, chemical, and biological water quality measurements are collected. Water quality monitoring stations include locations where dissolved oxygen, temperature, pH, conductivity, nutrients, bacteria, metals, algal toxins, organics, and other environmental parameters have been measured. The database also distinguishes between surface-water monitoring sites and discharge monitoring sites such as industrial facilities, municipal wastewater treatment facilities, and storm sewer outfalls
MassDEP staff and their monitoring partners collect field observations and environmental samples from designated monitoring stations throughout the state. Monitoring activities include fish tissue sampling, fish population surveys, benthic macroinvertebrate sampling, habitat assessments, in-situ water quality measurements, laboratory analysis of water samples, and environmental observations. Monitoring locations are stored as point features within a GIS database and are linked to watershed delineations used by the Watershed Planning Program for water quality assessment and reporting
