Dataset
To provide a geospatial inventory of stream-gaging stations in Massachusetts
The database was developed through MassGIS and is based on stream-gaging stations maintained by the USGS. The dataset represents streamflow monitoring stations across Massachusetts and serves as a statewide reference layer for hydrologic monitoring and water-resource investigations. Although the stations are operated by USGS, they are funded through a combination of federal, state, and local partnerships.
The database contains georeferenced stream-gaging stations distributed throughout Massachusetts. Each station represents a monitoring location where streamflow and hydrologic conditions are measured. The dataset includes station locations, identifiers, and associated monitoring information used for streamflow measurement, flood analysis, water availability assessments, watershed studies, hydrologic modeling, drought monitoring, and environmental management.
Stream-gaging stations are installed and maintained by the USGS to continuously monitor streamflow conditions. Measurements are collected using stream-gaging equipment that records water levels and stream discharge.
