The Groundwater Data portal is maintained by the Nebraska Department of Water, Energy and Environment (DWEE). Nebraska relies heavily on groundwater resources, particularly the High Plains Aquifer system, and state law requires the registration of most groundwater wells. The portal provides access to groundwater well records, groundwater quality information, groundwater management resources, and mapping tools used by state agencies, Natural Resources Districts (NRDs), researchers, and the public.
The database provides access to registered groundwater well records, groundwater well retrieval tools, interactive groundwater well maps, GIS well datasets, groundwater management area information, groundwater quality monitoring resources, agrichemical contaminant databases, and groundwater reports. The registered well database contains detailed information on well purpose, well status, location, ownership, depth, pumping rate, static and pumping water levels, construction characteristics, geological materials encountered during drilling, irrigated acreage, completion dates, groundwater management district information, and other well-registration attributes. The portal also includes quality-assessed groundwater contaminant information, particularly nitrate and pesticide monitoring data compiled from federal, state, local, and university sources.
Groundwater well information is collected through Nebraska's mandatory groundwater well registration program. State law requires most newly constructed wells to be registered, with information submitted by well owners or contractors.
