To provide public access to environmental geospatial datasets that support environmental protection and natural resource management
The Environment Collection is part of the North Dakota GIS Hub, the state's centralized geospatial data platform. The collection brings together environmental datasets from multiple state and federal agencies, including the North Dakota Department of Environmental Quality (NDDEQ), North Dakota Game and Fish Department, North Dakota Department of Water Resources, and the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS).
The collection contains various environmental datasets and services covering water resources, source water protection, environmental monitoring, land resources, wildlife habitat, and environmental infrastructure. Available resources include community and non-community source water protection areas, surface water sampling sites, hydrologic unit boundaries (HUC regions and subregions), major land resource areas, key native wildlife habitat areas, landfill locations, and other environmental management datasets. These resources support environmental monitoring, water quality protection, watershed management, habitat conservation, land-use planning, environmental assessment, and regulatory activities across North Dakota.
Datasets are developed and maintained through environmental monitoring programs, watershed studies, source water protection initiatives, wildlife management programs, land resource inventories, hydrologic assessments, GIS mapping activities, and regulatory reporting systems. Data are collected through field surveys, monitoring stations, environmental investigations, geospatial analysis, and administrative programs and are published through the North Dakota GIS Hub for public access and use.
