Dataset
To provide public access to environmental, natural resource, water-quality, hydrologic, and regulatory datasets across Virginia
The Environment & Natural Resources Collection is part of Virginia's Open Data Portal and is closely integrated with the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) Environmental Data Hub. The collection serves as a centralized source for environmental datasets, GIS resources, monitoring information, mapping applications, and regulatory data maintained by Virginia agencies.
The collection contains datasets related to air quality, wildlife conservation, endangered species, fisheries, biological resources, environmental justice, and natural resource management. Some of the available resources include Air Quality Index (AQI) reports, pollutant monitoring datasets for PM2.5, ozone, nitrogen dioxide (NO₂), sulphur dioxide (SO₂), carbon monoxide (CO), and lead (Pb); endangered and threatened species databases; species recovery and conservation records; wildlife management area boundaries; biological sampling data; fisheries datasets; coastal resilience planning resources; environmental justice information; and environmental education materials.
Datasets are compiled and maintained through environmental monitoring programs, water-quality assessments, groundwater investigations, pollution reporting systems, environmental permitting programs, regulatory compliance activities, GIS mapping initiatives, and natural resource management programs conducted by Virginia state agencies. Data are collected through field monitoring, laboratory analysis, regulatory reporting, remote sensing, and administrative information systems and are distributed through Virginia's environmental data infrastructure.
