Dataset
To provide public access to water-related geospatial datasets that support water management across Wisconsin.
The Water Geospatial Data Collection is part of the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (WDNR) Open Data Portal. It serves as a centralized repository of GIS datasets related to Wisconsin's lakes, rivers, streams, wetlands, watersheds, aquatic habitats, and water quality programs. The collection supports state water management, environmental conservation, Clean Water Act implementation, fisheries management, and ecological planning through downloadable GIS data and web services.
The collection contains numerous water-related geospatial datasets covering water quality, wetlands, watersheds, rivers, lakes, streams, aquatic habitats, restoration projects, and regulatory water management. Available datasets include 303(d) impaired lakes (listed and delisted), 305(b) assessed lakes, Outstanding and Exceptional Lakes, Outstanding and Exceptional Rivers and Streams, Water Management Units, Watershed Plans, Special Area Management Plan (SAMP) Areas and Streams, Special Wetlands Inventory Study Areas and Streams, Wisconsin Wetland Inventory (WWI), Potentially Restorable Wetlands, Wetland Restoration Tracking, Potential Ephemeral Ponds, Mitigation Bank Sites, Coastal Wisconsin Wetlands Streams, Classified Trout Spring Ponds, Sturgeon Streams, Musky Areas, Other Public Rights Features, County Trout Regulations, and Rock River Total Maximum Daily Load (TMDL) datasets, including baseline phosphorus loads and required phosphorus reduction targets.
Datasets are developed and maintained by the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources through statewide water quality monitoring, watershed planning, wetland inventory programs, fisheries surveys, habitat assessments, restoration projects, hydrologic mapping, Clean Water Act assessment programs (Sections 303(d) and 305(b)), and Total Maximum Daily Load (TMDL) studies. Spatial datasets are published as feature services and geodatabases through the Wisconsin DNR Open Data Portal.
