To communicate trends in water withdrawals and water use across Wisconsin and support sustainable water resource management
The A Decade of Wisconsin Water Withdrawals StoryMap was developed by the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR), Water Use Section. It provides an overview of Wisconsin's water resources, explains how surface water and groundwater are used throughout the state, and presents long-term water withdrawal information collected under Wisconsin's water use reporting program.
The StoryMap presents information on Wisconsin's water resources, surface water withdrawals, groundwater withdrawals, seasonal water withdrawal trends, high-capacity wells, water use reporting, and water use by sector. It includes interactive dashboards showing annual and monthly water withdrawals, comparisons of surface water and groundwater use, statistics on high-capacity wells, municipal water supply, agricultural irrigation, industrial water use, aquaculture, dairy farming, cranberry production, and power generation. The StoryMap also provides explanations of Wisconsin's water withdrawal regulations under the Great Lakes Compact, descriptions of groundwater and surface water systems, links to the Water Quantity Viewer, Well Driller Viewer, Well Construction Reports, Water Withdrawal Search, Water Use Reports, Wisconsin Groundwater StoryMap, and Monitoring Water Quantity StoryMap
The StoryMap is based on water withdrawal information reported by registered high-capacity water users throughout Wisconsin. The Wisconsin DNR compiles monthly withdrawal reports from registered facilities and combines these data with monitoring information from lakes, rivers, groundwater aquifers, and other water resources. The data are analyzed annually to evaluate water use by source, sector, location, and season, supporting sustainable water management and compliance with Wisconsin's implementation of the Great Lakes Compact.
