To provide statewide digital flood hazard mapping data that supports flood risk assessment, hydrologic modeling, floodplain management, insurance planning, and emergency preparedness in West Virginia.
The West Virginia GIS Technical Center (WVGISTC) maintains access to statewide flood hazard mapping resources based on FEMA’s Digital Flood Insurance Rate Maps (DFIRM) and the National Flood Hazard Layer (NFHL). These datasets support the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) and provide authoritative floodplain information used by federal agencies, local governments, planners, engineers, emergency managers, and researchers.
The dataset provides statewide flood hazard and floodplain mapping information for all 55 counties in West Virginia. Available data include Digital Flood Insurance Rate Maps (DFIRM), National Flood Hazard Layer (NFHL) data, 100-year floodplain boundaries, Special Flood Hazard Areas (SFHA), flood insurance rate zones, base flood elevations, regulatory floodways, hydrologic and hydraulic (H&H) modeling datasets, cross sections, elevation benchmarks, Flood Insurance Studies (FIS), county floodplain GIS layers, preliminary and effective DFIRM datasets, and downloadable flood profile PDF reports. The system also supports the West Virginia Flood Tool, which provides statewide access to floodplain mapping and associated flood risk information for flood hazard assessment and planning.
The dataset is derived from FEMA’s National Flood Hazard Layer (NFHL) and Digital Flood Insurance Rate Map (DFIRM) databases developed under the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP). FEMA and its mapping partners generate the data using hydrologic and hydraulic (H&H) modeling, engineering surveys, floodplain analysis, elevation modeling, and flood risk assessments. WVGISTC compiles statewide floodplain layers and integrates county-level flood mapping products into the West Virginia Flood Tool for public access and analysis.
