To provide statewide hydrography geospatial data for mapping, analysis, and management of surface water resources in West Virginia.
The West Virginia Hydrography Map Service is part of the West Virginia GIS Technical Center (WVGISTC) ArcGIS Services Directory under the Inland Waters category. It functions as a statewide reference mapping service that provides standardized hydrographic data layers representing rivers, lakes, streams, and other surface water bodies in West Virginia. The service is designed to support GIS-based hydrologic analysis, water resource management, watershed studies, environmental planning, and integration into external GIS applications through ArcGIS REST services.
The service provides scale-dependent hydrography reference layers representing surface water resources across West Virginia. Available layers include Major Lakes (100k scale), Major Rivers (100k scale), Waterbodies (500k–144k scale), National Hydrography Dataset (NHD) Streams (144k scale), 24k NHD Waterbodies (72k scale), 24k NHD Waterbodies (36k scale), 24k NHD Streams with labels (72k and 36k scales), Local Resolution Waterbodies, and Local Resolution Streams. The service allows users to visualize and query hydrographic features at multiple map scales, supporting analysis of lakes, river networks, drainage systems, and surface water distribution throughout West Virginia.
The service integrates hydrography datasets derived from the National Hydrography Dataset (NHD) together with state-level hydrographic mapping resources maintained by WVGISTC. Data are organized into scale-dependent GIS layers optimized for different map resolutions and are published as an ArcGIS REST MapServer, allowing dynamic querying, visualization, and integration into GIS platforms such as ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Online, and web mapping applications.
