The National Inventory of Dams (NID), maintained by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, serves as the official national repository for information on dams throughout the United States and its territories. The platform consolidates information from federal agencies, state dam safety offices, and other regulatory authorities, providing users with an interactive mapping interface and data access tools for infrastructure management, research, and decision-making.
The National Inventory of Dams (NID) provides detailed information on more than 91,000 dams in the United States, including their locations, physical characteristics, purposes, ownership, hazard classifications, inspection records, and other structural and geographic attributes. The database includes over 70 data fields per dam and offers downloadable national-level data to support dam safety assessments, infrastructure management, and policy development by federal, state, and local agencies.
The National Inventory of Dams compiles and standardizes information submitted by state and federal agencies responsible for dam regulation and safety oversight. Dams are generally included in the inventory if they meet federal size criteria, typically those exceeding 25 feet in height with more than 15 acre-feet of storage, or those exceeding 6 feet in height with storage capacities greater than 50 acre-feet, or if they are classified as high- or significant-hazard dams.
