To provide centralized public access to groundwater-related data collected across the state of Kentucky
The platform is maintained by the Kentucky Geological Survey, which operates as a state geological research institution under the University of Kentucky. The portal consolidates groundwater and hydrological information collected from multiple agencies, particularly the Kentucky Division of Water, to make water-related environmental data accessible to researchers, policymakers, water managers, and the public.
The platform includes extensive groundwater and hydrological datasets covering water well records, spring records, groundwater quality data, and hydrogeological information across Kentucky. Users can search water well and spring records by county, quadrangle, radius around a location, or AKGWA number, with returned information including well location, usage, construction details, lithology, casing data, and associated mapping services. The portal also provides downloadable statewide datasets containing all recorded wells and springs in formats such as Excel spreadsheets and ESRI shapefiles. In addition, it includes groundwater-quality datasets covering 545 analytes grouped into categories such as metals, nutrients, microbes, pesticides, petroleum hydrocarbons, radionuclides, herbicides, volatile organic compounds, and inorganic substances. Supporting resources include groundwater quality comparison tools, hydrologic atlases, county groundwater reports, static groundwater quality maps, watershed basin maps, water publications, volunteer monitoring datasets through Kentucky Watershed Watch, and interactive groundwater mapping services that visualize water resources geographically.
The data is compiled through continuous groundwater monitoring programs and field reporting systems managed primarily by the Kentucky Division of Water, with integration and maintenance by the Kentucky Geological Survey. Water well and spring records are collected through drilling reports, geological surveys, hydrogeological field investigations, and regulatory reporting systems.
