Dataset
To provide geospatial data on surface water bodies across the State of Hawaii, supporting water resource management, hydrological analysis, and environmental monitoring of inland water features.
This dataset is part of the Hawaii Statewide GIS Program’s open data platform and contains waterbody features derived from the United States Geological Survey National Hydrography Dataset (NHD). The dataset supports government agencies, researchers, planners, and environmental organizations involved in water management, conservation, and geographic analysis.
The dataset includes mapped hydrographic and waterbody features throughout Hawaii, covering lakes, ponds, reservoirs, streams, rivers, marshes, estuaries, reefs, drainage systems, basins, sub-basins, hydrologic unit boundaries (HUCs), watershed boundaries, dams, levees, canals, submerged water features, coastlines, water intake and outflow structures, waterfalls, wetlands, artificial paths, underground conduits, and related inland water infrastructure. It also contains hydrologic classification attributes, geographic boundaries, drainage network information, hydrographic unit codes, and supporting metadata that enable spatial analysis of surface water systems.
The dataset was compiled using the USGS National Hydrography Dataset (NHD), a nationally standardized hydrographic framework for mapping surface water resources in the United States. Data was downloaded from the USGS National Map platform in October 2022 and integrated into Hawaii’s ArcGIS-based open data infrastructure.
