The portal is managed by the Iowa Department of Natural Resources and serves as a centralized information system for monitoring drinking water system operations and regulatory performance within the state. It consolidates operational, compliance, inspection, and permitting information related to public water supply systems regulated under state and federal drinking water standards, particularly under the Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA).
The portal consists of four integrated sections. The Public Water Supply (PWS) Information section provides summary statistics on active public water systems, including system classifications such as community, transient non-community, and non-transient non-community systems, source water classifications (groundwater, surface water, purchased water), field office distribution, and population served. The Compliance Summary and Charts section provides regulatory compliance indicators showing public water system adherence to health-based drinking water standards, monitoring requirements, violation records, and historical compliance trends based on annual compliance reporting. The Sanitary Surveys Summary and Charts section contains records of sanitary inspections conducted across field offices, including yearly survey completion statistics that evaluate operational conditions, infrastructure, maintenance practices, and regulatory deficiencies within water supply systems. The Water Supply Operations (WSO) Permits Issued Summary and Charts section provides permit issuance records, including renewal permits, revised permits, annual permit trends, and permit management activities associated with water system operations.
Data is collected through Iowa’s drinking water regulatory monitoring system using the Safe Drinking Water Information System (SDWIS). Information is generated from public water utility reporting, compliance monitoring programs, health-based regulatory testing, sanitary inspections conducted by field offices, permit application reviews, and operational oversight activities. The portal processes the data into statistical summaries, interactive charts, and compliance trend reporting for public access and regulatory monitoring.
