To provide geospatial tools, environmental data, guidance, and operational resources to support the planning, assessment, and implementation of wastewater and environmental surveillance (WES) programmes.
ES.world is a WHO-hosted platform developed through the WHO Geographic Information Systems Centre for Health. It supports teams working on wastewater and environmental surveillance by bringing together geospatial and environmental resources for understanding surveillance coverage and designing or strengthening WES systems. The platform is intended to support applications such as catchment analysis, sewer network mapping, environmental suitability assessment, and population estimation.
The platform includes geospatial tools and environmental resources for wastewater and environmental surveillance, including catchment analysis, sewer network mapping, environmental suitability assessment, and population estimation. It also provides operational and technical guidance for WES programmes. The resources highlighted include a practical field guide for establishing wastewater and environmental surveillance in a new location and a Terrain Ruggedness Index covering cities with populations greater than 100,000. The Terrain Ruggedness Index can be used to assess whether elevation-based modelling of wastewater flows is likely to be useful before field resources are committed.
The platform brings together geospatial analysis, environmental datasets, and technical guidance to support WES planning and implementation. Its tools can be used to analyse geographic and environmental characteristics relevant to wastewater surveillance, including catchment areas, sewer networks, terrain, and population distribution. The Terrain Ruggedness Index is derived from elevation information and is intended to help assess the suitability of terrain-based modelling of wastewater flows. The platform therefore provides analytical resources and supporting information rather than a single standardized data-collection methodology.
