Dataset
To provide household-level data on the quantity and composition of domestic solid waste generated in Kampala City, together with socioeconomic, housing, water-access, sanitation, and other household characteristics.
The dataset contains household-level data collected during a seven-day domestic solid-waste measurement campaign involving 103 households in three Kampala parishes selected to represent different income levels: Bwaise I (low income), Bukoto I (middle income), and Ggaba (high income). The dataset accompanies the 2026 study, Quantity and Composition of Domestic Solid Waste in Kampala City as Influenced by Socioeconomic Factors.
The dataset contains 103 household records and 37 variables. It includes the measured mass of ten waste categories: food, garden, wood, textiles, paper, polythene, plastics, glass, metals, and other waste collected over seven days. Derived measures include total waste, daily waste generation, per-capita waste generation, waste volume, and waste density. Household and dwelling characteristics include location, income level, number of occupants, age and gender of the household head, education, profession, monthly income band, length of stay, occupancy status, housing quality, roof, wall, and floor materials, drinking-water access, sanitation-facility sharing, and road condition.
Data collection was divided into two major streams: socio-economic household data, collected through structured questionnaires, and a domestic solid waste (DSW) quantification and composition study, obtained through source sampling and direct measurement of domestic waste collected at each household for 7 days. The waste sampling, quantification and composition study followed guidelines from the standard test method for determination of the composition of unprocessed municipal waste
