To provide field-based information on the condition, functionality, accessibility, and monitoring capacity of groundwater monitoring infrastructure in Nkhotakota District, Malawi, including groundwater level measurements, monitoring equipment, site characteristics, community awareness, and recommended infrastructure improvements.
The dataset was collected by BASEflow Malawi in 2022 as part of an assessment of groundwater monitoring infrastructure in Nkhotakota District. It provides information on monitoring wells and their surrounding sites, including groundwater levels, well characteristics, monitoring equipment, accessibility, infrastructure condition, community sensitization, water-source characteristics, and infrastructure maintenance and rehabilitation needs. The dataset contains 123 observations and 40 variables.
The dataset includes records on groundwater monitoring wells, including well depth, static groundwater level, groundwater-level measurement methods and reference datum, casing characteristics, availability and condition of manual dippers, groundwater-level and barometric loggers, logger installation depth and data-download status, and personal protective equipment. It also includes information on the administrative location of monitoring sites, the purpose and strategic importance of wells, site accessibility, community sensitization, potential vandalism risks and controls, access to potable water, nearby water-source types, and recommended actions for improving or rehabilitating monitoring infrastructure
The data were collected through field assessments of groundwater monitoring infrastructure in Nkhotakota District in 2022. Field observations recorded the physical characteristics and condition of monitoring wells, groundwater-level measurements, the availability and functionality of monitoring equipment, site accessibility, community awareness, and the condition of surrounding water sources. The assessment also documented recommended maintenance, replacement, rehabilitation, and training actions for individual monitoring sites.
